Overview

The Human Sciences Research: Harnessing Talent for Complex Environments colloquium will provide defense manpower-personnel, training, and education leadership an opportunity to hear from top experts in the scientific community regarding many of the cutting-edge advances in Human Sciences Research (HSR). The colloquium will address issues pertaining to the human dimensions of the following areas:

  • Cognitive
  • Neurological
  • Organizational
  • Medical
  • Human Systems Integration
  • Human Performance Sciences

Our forces, both military and civilian, are deployed globally in some of the most culturally challenging environments. Operational conditions range from full combat to peacekeeping and nation-building. This demands sensitivity to cultural relations and local practices as depicted by Marine General Charles Krulak's "Three Block War" and Maj. Gen. Bob Scales's discussion of psycho-cultural wars. Human factors and HSR are key ingredients for our success in current and future conflicts.

This colloquium will bring together policy makers and Human Sciences researchers to begin to explore how we might better focus, coordinate and optimize our efforts to improve scientific knowledge and deliver its benefits to those who face the challenges of 21st Century conflicts.

On 13 June 2007, a larger conference will be held at the National Defense University, where a wider audience of internal and external experts will learn about the insights that result from this colloquium.
